A Space Odyssey 2022

A Space Odyssey 2022 featured a combination of illustrated and live action stop motion animation. The graphics reminded me of illustrations the Eames would use in their short films, featuring very simplified renditions of space and objects. With everything rendered at 8k resolution, everything looked incredibly sharp, despite being projected on, what looked like, a giant fraying bed sheet. The opening scenes imagined the space station as a large interconnected set of spinning and revolving amusement park rides - a ferris wheel linked to a merry-go-round linked to tilt-a-whirl, and so on - and all orbiting a central globe structure. The animation was perfectly synched to a minimal piano score produced by a German pop music composer from the eighties, but I don't recall their name.

Inside the space station, we are introduced to the central characters - a multi-generational family, all with bright blue eyes, and all red-headed with Hypertrichosis. In zero gravity their heads look like two blue marbles surrounded by licking flames. They've been cut off from civilization on Earth for so long that they've developed a new Khoisan like language. However the clicking and popping sounds they make to communicate curiously builds up an electric charge on their heads, making all of their hair stand straight out. This causes them a great deal of discomfort and ends with them letting out a piercing shriek, which for them, is akin to placing a period at the end of a sentence.
