clarice

lucas and i went the old age home, the hospital or the morgue, i dont know. we were looking for my dead grandmother and we were looking for the right counter for marriage licenses. along an unlit hall is where they kept the terminally old until they finally slipped away. each ten feet of hall was illuminated by a single 10watt incandescent bulb. ha, i made lucas go down the hall, section by section, checking the name plates for clarice, and if there wasn't one he'd have to peek around the curtain.

just outside i found the line up for the licenses. "hmm, who should i say im getting married to" .. "i dunno, you aren't getting married" .. "well, ya, but i want the license anyway, just to have. ha, i'll tell them im getting married to my grandmother!" .. "but she's dead" .. "bah, by the time they go check we'll be out of here anyway".

back to my grandmother's eulogy. the casket was there, and the immediate family had assembled. the guy conducting everything was some old school goth, he looked a little like peter murphy. as he gave the introductory eulogy he waltzed around us being all dramatic as he spoke, like he was in some lame shakespearean play.

at the end of it they brought out a silver platter with a notebook in the center of it, three slices of cake on one side, and three custard/berry tarts and a fruit truffle on the other side. hands reached in from all angles snatching up the desserts. i wound up getting one of the slices of cake, tall white and layered with whipped creams and such. my uncle didn't look to impressed with the whole scene "so, like was everyone happy with that. Man, what was that anyway?" ..i guess in reference to the peter murphy guy.

then back to when she was alive, we all sat around my grandmother as she played everything down, fitting answers into compact sarcastic witticisms. she's was lying in a hospital bed, but we were outside and she lookeded and sounded like she was far from dead.
